Simply Wonderful
I just love this book. I stumbled on to it while browsing the library shelf and knew I had to own it. The recipes are great, the pictures are beautiful, and the book is well laid out by country. I've been to SE Asia, and now every time I prepare a meal from this book, I look at the pictures while cooking, and enjoy the wonderful memories of Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, where I first sampled many of the dishes. This book would make a perfect gift for someone who has traveled SE Asia and loves the food. It was my gift to me.

Vatch's rules
I lived in Bangkok for 3 years and have tried every Thai cookbook in print--this is the BEST. Easy easy easy and authentic, with beautiful illustrations and descriptions of food from Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, this makes a great gift. You will use this cookbook all the time.

Walking San Francisco (FalconGuide)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (September, 1999)
Author: Liz Gans
Average review score:

Excellent book - the best of its kind on the market
I love this book. I have done about 7 of the walks so far and they have all been brilliant. I am going to do them all before I leave San Fran in a couple of months time. The guides take you to all the most famous locales and sites with many good suggestions for shops and cafes along the way.

But what I love best is that the book is small enough to slip into your pocket. I frequently leave my apartment" with no other guidebook but this one. I really, really recommend it to anyone who wants to get off the beaten track - it is so much more fun to see a city that way.

get out those walking shoes
Of all the guide books I have consulted, this San Francisco compilation of walking tours is the most diverse and complete. Not only are familiar and less familiar parts of the city covered, but also how to reach starting points by pubic transportation (vital for pedestrians), time required, degree of difficulty, and special points to note. It's a great introduction to this fair city.

Great Gift for Gourmets!
This cook book is informative, useful, and inspiring. The recipes are yummy and well worth the effort. Be sure to try the Walnut Torte with Chocolate Glaze!

The book is divided into regions of Washington State, with an interesting narrative about each region in each section. There are historic photos, too, so Wandering and Feasting is a book to read, in addition to cook book as reference.

The presentation is crisp and appealing.

A great gift for gourmets, people who cook, NWophiles, and those who like to eat others' good cooking!

Unique Northwest Cuisine
Well written book with fascinating information about Washington State. The book includes recipes which highlight different regions in Washington. Ms. Caditz, a Washington native, weaves interesting stories and features throughout the book. A must have if you enjoy cooking and enjoy Northwest cuisine

The War in Bosnia-Herzegovina: Ethnic Conflict and International Intervention
Published in Hardcover by M.E.Sharpe (November, 1999)
Authors: Steven L. Burg and Paul S. Shoup
Average review score:

A lucid and comprehensive account of the war in Bosnia
I have read many books in which the authors attempt to account for the causes of the Bosnian conflict. The problem with these books is that the authors provide an oversimplified and shallow description of the war in Bosnia. This book however manages to give a thorough and in-depth analysis of the causes of the Bosnian conflict. In my opinion, the authors have managed to explain which political and social factors gave rise to the war in Bosnia. Giving a detailed historical background of the conflict, the authors allow the reader to gain an important insight into historical events that may have contributed to the enormous disparities among Muslims, Croats and Serbs. In addition, the involvement of Serbia and Croatia in the Bosnian war is thoroughly examined. There is ample evidence that Serbia and Croatia provided Bosnian Serbs and Croats with arms. Furthermore it is well known that Serbian forces committed a large majority of the war crimes in Bosnia. In conclusion, this book will help you gain a richer understanding of the Bosnian conflict. Strongly recommended.

The definitive work on Bosnia
Burg and Shoup's book will stand for some years as the definitive work on the Bosnian war and the missteps of international intervention there. It is a must read by anyone interested in what happened in that mountainous Balkan country.

This book is rather detailed and is not meant to be a 'quick read' for the casual reader. Instead, it uses a vast array of sources from the region as well as the Western press and interviews to make its case about the goals of the three sides as well as the desire of the 'West' to stay out of the conflict. Furthermore, it provides a much-needed and accessible overview of the various peace plans and maps which aimed at stopping the carnage in Bosnia.

It is an excellent book which sets a new standard for research on ethnic conflicts and international policy.

Love is in the air!
Weekends for Two in Southern California: 50 Romantic Getaways is a wonderful book for the romantic in all of us. If you're looking for a great place to stay for the weekend, look no further! This book showcases 50 enchanting places to stay in Southern California when you're in the mood for love within beautiful surroundings. Each property is described in detail with room descriptions, prices and includes full color photographs. My wife and I love the Apple Farm Inn in San Luis Obispo. It's a charming country style inn that's more comfy and cozy than home and also has a great restaurant where homemade corn bread, apple cider and ice cream is featured. I love looking through this book whenever I am planning a trip away with my wife. I'm sure you'll love this book as well!

Highly recommended! Don't miss Bill Gleeson's other Weeekends for Two books for Northern California and other locales. They are great too! You'll feel warm and fuzzy just looking at these lovingly selected getaways.

When Duty Whispers Low
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (March, 2002)
Author: John J. Gobbell

Fast Greyhound WWW II Action
Haze grey and underway. Tin can sailors will love the book.

Great sea/air battle scenes and lots of them. John puts you right in the action. This is the third in a series of SAGAs involving Todd Ingram. The first two should be read first. I look forward to the next novel.

Best sea novel since "Time and Tide" by Thomas Fleming.

A very good sea action adventure
If you enjoy your novels featuring sea battles -e.g. the Hornblower series, etc.- you will enjoy this book. It is not your ordinary sea action story. It is a well written, literary fiction. The author, like Bernard Cornwell in his Sharpe series, uses an actual historic battle event as the setting for his story. In this case it is the naval battle in the Pacific in WWII between the U. S. Navy and the Japanese fleet. In particular it is centered around the Japanese attempt to retake Guadalcanal.
The action is real and the characters give a reader a real sense of what it must have been like while serving on a destroyer in these battles.
Without missing a beat in the action and drama, the author also interweaves into his story the introduction of an actual secret U. S. weapon that was deployed in these battles, namely, the proximity fuse. This and a few other sideplots increase the drama and one's interest in this book.
If you like this genre of fiction, then I also highly recommend a previous book by the author entitled, "The Last Lieutenant."
It's a great book to have on a summer vacation to be read by the sea.

Where to Prospect for Gold in Alaska Without Getting Shot!
Published in Paperback by Goldstream Pubns (01 December, 1996)
Authors: Ron R. Wendt and Bonnie G. Wendt
Average review score:

Good book, Worth the money!!!
This book gives the reader good idea of where to go in Alaska if you using the highway system as your primary transportation method. The book is grouped by each Highway (Dalton, Glenn, etc) and each sub-area within that highway as to how well you can expect to do while prospecting in each area.
The Author has rated each sub-area (Creek/River System) between 1 and 3 stars. Each area lists if you can only pan, or use a sluice, dredge, etc. Times of the year that you are permitted to dredge, etc. It also lists the type of gold you are likely to find. (fine, course, nuggets, etc.)
I haven't used the book in actual practice yet, but plan to this summer. I would say that from what I have read that it is well worth the money.

Good book, Second addtion is needed.

An extrodinary real life look at Polynesian people & places.
White Savages in the South Seas is a candid look at the not so glamourous lives of real people living in the South Pacific. This book is filled with fasinating characters like Susy No Pants and interesting adventures. Their stories are well written with great passion and witty humor. I enjoyed every moment.

Much more than a travel expose....loaded with wit & reality
A thinking person's look at life in the South Pacific as seen through the eyes of an imaginative and involved participant in life. You'll laugh and you'll cry and you will get an insight into the lives of many unusual and colorful people. Definitely not a "travel book," but rather a carefully written volumne which will forever effect the way you see life in the South Pacific.
